Gibbon (White-Cheeked Gibbon)

Appearance
There are several subspecies
of black, or crested, gibbon, occurring in various
parts of Indo-China; they differ in details of fur
coloration. The black male is slightly larger than
the female and has a tuft of hair on the crown; the
female is buff colored. Body: 45 - 63 cm (17 3/4 -
24 3/4 in), tail: absent. |
Description
Like most gibbons, the male
of this species has a throat sac, which amplifies
his voice. |
Regions
Indo-China, Hainan in rain forest |
Diet
Black gibbons feed on a variety
of foods, mostly fruit, buds and insects, although
occasionally small vertebrates may be eaten. |
Breeding
A mature female of 7-8 years
of age produces 1 offspring per gestation of 240 days.
At age 2, the black gibbon would part its way with
its parents. |
