Binturong
(Bear Cat)

Appearance
A large viverrid with long,
coarse fur, the binturong has distinctive ear tufts
and a prehensile tail, which it uses as a fifth limb
when climbing. It is the only carnivore other than
the kinkajou, a member of the raccoon family, to possess
such a tail. Body: 61 - 96.5 cm (24 - 38 in), tail:
56 - 89 cm (22 - 35 in) |
Description
During the day, it sleeps up
in the trees and emerges at night to climb slowly,
but skillfully, among the branches, searching for
food. |
Regions
S.E. Asia, Palawan, Sumatra,
Java, Borneo in forest |
Diet
Fruit and other plant matter,
as well as insects, small vertebrates and carrion. |
Breeding
After a gestation of 90 to 92
days, the female produces a litter of 1 or 2 young.
Both parents care for the young, which are born blind
and helpless. |
