Binturong (Bear Cat)

Appearance

A large viverrid with long, coarse fur, the binturong has distinctive ear tufts and a prehensile tail, which it uses as a fifth limb when climbing. It is the only carnivore other than the kinkajou, a member of the raccoon family, to possess such a tail. Body: 61 - 96.5 cm (24 - 38 in), tail: 56 - 89 cm (22 - 35 in)

Description


During the day, it sleeps up in the trees and emerges at night to climb slowly, but skillfully, among the branches, searching for food.

Regions

S.E. Asia, Palawan, Sumatra, Java, Borneo in forest

Diet

Fruit and other plant matter, as well as insects, small vertebrates and carrion.

Breeding

After a gestation of 90 to 92 days, the female produces a litter of 1 or 2 young. Both parents care for the young, which are born blind and helpless.
