Appearance
This egret, also sometimes known
as the American egret, is one of the most widespread
of its family. Nonbreeding and immature birds have
yellow bills, but as the breeding season approaches,
the adult's bill becomes mostly black. Size: 90 -
120 cm (35 - 47 in)
Description
Regions
Almost worldwide; absent from
much of Europe in shallow water
Diet
It finds its food -- fish, mollusks,
insects, small mammals, birds and plants -- either
by standing and waiting in the water or by slowly
stalking its prey.
Breeding
The nest is made in a tree or
reedbed, and the female lays 2 to 5 eggs. Both parents
incubate the clutch in shifts for a total of 25 or
26 days.
