Appearance

Light-brown feathers along its chest and stomach. Dark brown feathers with white spots along its wings. Size: 56 cm (22 in)

Description


A specialized, semiaquatic owl, the brown fish owl is always found near water and feeds on fish, as well as on the more typical prey of owls. Its feet and ankles are unfeathered, an adaptation which allows it to wade in the shallows to catch fish without the plumage getting wet.

Breeding

The breeding season of this species begins in February or March. It makes a nest platform in a tree by joining some branches together, or nests on a ledge or rock. Only 1 or 2 eggs are laid and are then incubated by both parents for a total of about 35 days.
