Appearance

The slender cockatiel has long wings and tail and a tapering crest on its head. Males and females differ slightly in plumage, males having brighter markings than females. Size: 32 cm (12 1/2 in)

They like to be in pairs or small groups in open plains near water sources inland from coastal regions.

Diet

In pairs or small flocks, cockatiels forage on the ground for grass seeds and also feed in the trees on fruit and berries.

Breeding

Breeding usually takes place between August and December, but the exact timing depends on the conditions, particularly on rainfall. The 4 to 7 eggs are laid in a hole in a tree and are incubated by both parents for 21 to 23 days. The young leave the nest at 4 or 5 weeks, and males acquire their bright facial markings at about 6 months.
